Late that afternoon, she took a long walk up the beach, just to get the kinks out from sitting at that desk for so long. By the time she headed back toward home, the sun was beginning to set beneath the western horizon, casting a wide swath of gold and red over the gentle swell of the sea. The tide was coming in, lapping gently against the sandy shore, and the screeching gulls swooped low, scavenging for their last meal of the day.

As she came around the last wide bend, she could just see her house, and was filled with a sudden warm glow at the familiar sight. She felt much better after the long walk and had even managed to put the conversation with Carol out of her mind. It was very peaceful in the balmy evening air, a slight breeze warm on her face and arms.

Then, as she neared the house, she noticed that someone was standing on the shoreline, looking out over the darkening blue of the sea. It had to be Ross, and she stopped in her tracks, staring.

His back was toward her, and he was dressed only in a pair of low-slung jeans, his hands stuck in the back pockets. His upper body was bare, the tape still binding his ribs. As she wondered what he was looking at so intently, her eyes traveled along his line of vision, out over the ocean.

At that moment, two sleek gray porpoises leaped together out of the water, a good three feet into the air, then dived back, just as though they were playing a game. Sarah watched entranced as their snouts broke the water again, thinking she must make a note of their appearance. She glanced at her watch to check the time, and when she looked up again, she saw that Ross had turned and was now gazing fixedly at her.

Their eyes met and held, and a silent, unspoken communication seemed to pass between them, almost like a charge of electricity. He began to walk slowly toward her, and she found herself moving in his direction, almost against her will.

When they finally met, they stood there wordlessly, inches away from each other, eyes still locked together. Sarah’s pulse was pounding erratically, she had trouble breathing, and a heated glow was spreading through her body. Still, she couldn’t make herself look away from those mesmerizing deep gray eyes.

Suddenly, she felt herself swaying toward him, heard a low, sighing groan escape her throat, and in the next moment was in his arms, clinging to him, all her good intentions and sensible warnings simply flying out the window. All she knew was that this was where she wanted to be. The consequences simply didn’t matter anymore.

“Sarah,” she heard him murmur in her ear as he pulled her more tightly to him. “Sarah. You’ll never know how badly I’ve wanted to hold you like this again.”

There was no mistaking the genuine ache in his voice, and for the first time she grasped the fact that she also wielded power over him.
